What does it mean to “Keep it 100”, also sometimes referred to as one “hunnit”, especially in 2022? Keeping it 100 is a slang phrase similar to an older colloquialism favored in the streets (remember the “keep it real” phrase) but it is even more widespread in the public lexicon. It generally means to stay trUe and honest to oneself and others by being forthright and living authentically in terms of what you know, learned and your values no matter what anyone else says. It comes from the notion that 100% represents completeness or fullness just like when one feels healthy in mind, body and spirit or obtains a perfect score on a test/assignment. To me, functioning at the 100% level can be a goal (think New Years resolutions) with the intention of defining the highest level of personal vision for oneself infused with authenticity, integrity ands self love. However, it’s not necessarily perfection (100%) since we’re all imperfect beings and our personal best can sometimes simply mean to be “better” or “pass”.
So, here’s to “Keeping it 100” in 2022. The bar is set extremely high but perhaps a few trUths or life lessons can help guide us ALL on this sometimes very narrow path but important journey.

What does it mean to be an educated American? What should our students have acquired after successfully participating in the American educational indoctrination system? These are just a few of the questions I’ve pondered since schools reopened this Fall. I started this blogging journey discussing “why good teachers quit” in 2019 following my stint as an elementary teacher. For the sake of not repeating previous posts (go back and read for yourself or not), I will skip over my personal experience to address these important questions from a more global perspective. There is indeed a lot to ponder and debate in this arena and for the sake of discussion, I hope to make an attempt at identifying solutions in 2022.

It is safe to say that the 2020-2021 academic year was unlike any other. After the nationwide closures due to COVID-19, schools reopened in this fall to mostly in-person learning. This was a tremendous accomplishment for those most responsible for making school possible (teachers, principals, school board administrators, lunch aides, security guards, bus drivers etc.). All of these “servant leaders” worked tirelessly and diligently to create a safe school environment focussed on educating America’s young minds. As the school year has progressed, however, the same previous issues related to our educational indoctrination system have reared again, little by little, for US all to see.

mask mandates, social distancing, vaccines for kids … gun violence, teacher attrition, testing standards and scores, bullying …
In 2020, various combinations of in-person, hybrid, and remote learning models were utilized to achieve our educational goals. Teachers had to be flexible and adapt to different work conditions, teaching in unprecedented ways, using synchronous and asynchronous remote instruction, while also being challenged to VIRTUALLY establish more collaborative connections with students, families and colleagues. Health concerns were an added variable as some teachers went back to in-person education during the height of the pandemic. Yet, they managed to persevere as they’ve always done. Even so, we are still now somehow caught in the same fundamental system with the same challenges as before. Our current REALITY has only triggered US to pose similar questions related to how systemic CHANGE happens on a more global scale.

As 2022 approaches, more information is now available to review and dissect. The fate of our educational indoctrination system is up for an “assessment” triggering a national debate about what aspects deserve a “pass” or “fail”. The virtual reality of the most recent past school year has seemingly liberated US to think more freely about what is truly possible in these United States of America. Call me slightly “mad” if you must to attempt to identify NU solutions to CHANGE our educational indoctrination system but most free thinkers (I-AM) have willingly explored perceived problems with abandon and without fear of possible failure. Are YOU prepared to engage and join me and my tribe who have sometimes been called insane or crazy at some point in HIS-story? No matter your answer, class commences in 2022.
