In the United States, all children are required to be educated via a public or state-accredited private system. It can vary from state to state with certain exceptions, most notably homeschooling, which is also a viable option. Compulsory education refers to a period of mandatory educational attendance determined by the student’s age. Virtually all states have mandates for when children must begin school and how old they must be before dropping out. In 2020, COVID-19 has had a direct impact on our formal compulsory education system with a potential long term impact on some students who have lost hours of traditional instruction. The traditional compulsory education “rocket ship” might be temporarily grounded until we can figure out what is best for children. Since education involves more than the physical bricks and mortar of a school house, we’ve had to adjust how education is administered and by whom.

“I miss school and playing with my friends.”

Anonymous Child

Most of us have gone through this educational indoctrination system which helped to shape who and what we are today. There are indeed serious systemic flaws but the “turbulence” caused by COVID-19 has made us all aware of the importance of a functional compulsory education system. Students are now engaging in remote and in-person schooling to continue their formal learning. From my past experience teaching elementary students online, it is very difficult to re-create the learning environment established within a formal school setting. Teachable moments often occur throughout the day and cannot be replicated. Children are also missing out on the socialization with other students which serves a valuable purpose in human interaction and development. Interestingly, many students are now receiving real world teachable moments caused by current events (science/germs, social studies/political governance etc.) and via non-traditional teachers (essential workers and other service providers).

Multiple Intelligence Theory

Perhaps one day, we will understand the educational impact of COVID-19 on American students. For example, how many have fallen behind in their studies? Parents have joined educators as “substitute teachers” with most doing a commendable job. Not every student, however, will be able to excel or self regulate under this type of hybrid instruction. What has happened to the special needs students who often require accommodations, modifications and support to help them to be successful especially in school districts where remote learning is primarily used? All students have different learning styles and multiple intelligences as described by Howard Gardner in his 1983 book called “Frames of Mind”. His “Theory of Multiple Intelligence” provided teachers with the pedagogy to understand the different learning styles of students and to tailor instruction to fit the needs for each learner. But, what tools and training has been given to our “substitute teacher” parents? In addition, how have students performed in poor communities where some may not have had access to as many resources, the internet, structured learning environments or as much parental participation in their instruction? Prior to COVID-19, studies indicated that there has been historically less parental participation in these communities.

Bloom’s Taxonomy

As stated previously, teachers, parents and other non-traditional educators have stepped up to fill in the lesson planning and instructional gap during the pandemic. I even received my own informal “lesson” of sorts came from a repairman who shared his personal views about COVID-19. He helped me to understand the reasoning behind some people who reject the science. I didn’t agree with him but his willingness to share his thought process, allowed me to OVER-stand the deeper issues, beneath the surface, from his perspective. These types of informal lessons are invaluable for all of us even without a structured classroom setting. In fact, one of the primary goals of education, based upon Bloom’s Taxonomy, is to teach students how to analyze, evaluate and to create beyond simply memorizing data or information. Education is supposed to teach students how to use their own intellectual prowess to approach potential real world challenges. In 2020, we have surprisingly seen a gap in reasoning by some adults in believing the implications of the science and our collective responsibilities towards other humans. This only signifies another flaw in our current educational indoctrination system to this country’s shame.

The fact that humanity has to explain to children that all life matters, should be concern enough.

Perhaps, our current challenges will trigger all of us to appreciate the importance of contemplating beyond what we think we know towards a more deeper level for higher level learning. COVID-19 has definitely taught students a lot of real world lessons about politics, science and our collective responsibility towards other humans. Educators may one day know the full impact of the lost instruction caused by the pandemic but some students may have still benefited as well. For example, students have been allowed more freedom to engage in alternative settings and formats for learning that may prove to be more effective. More parents and guardians are taking their children outdoors, for example, and performing science experiments in nature. They are also having more in-depth discussions about germs and how to prevent the spread. Parents and guardians have also taken a more active role in their child’s learning during this time. They most definitely understand the importance of their participation and will probably not forget anytime soon just how difficult it is to be teacher.

The gift of a good education is not guaranteed but it remains invaluable and can open doors for any child’s future. As COVID-19 continues, what is means to be educated and how this is structured in America will most likely evolve as it should. All of “US” have a stake in America’s educational indoctrination system – – teachers, families, essential workers, non-traditional educators etc. The slogan “No Child Left Behind” means more than just teaching children how to read, write and do arithmetic. It is also a call for action requiring “US” to create an environment where children are educated on what it means to be a fully evolved human in the real world.

We have to educate our children so that they are able to make it to the top of Bloom’s Taxonomy.

The Auger and the Carpenter—

Just such a retrospect

Hath the perfected Life—

A past of Plank and Nail

And slowness—then the Scaffolds drop

Affirming it a Soul.

Written By Emily Dickinson

Green Nirvana

There is such a place, you know–

one that transcends time and space

and visions of what you’re supposed to resemble,

and the limits placed by the digits

of your mortal age.

I can feel the presence of it

in my bones,

where the sky is never ending and liberated

and the sun and moon

can openly converse and love and exist,

without the rules of superiors

who like tragic love stories and twisted histories.

Whatever you decide to do, whatever you decide to feel,

there are no restraints

to keep you from the prospects of flying,

or dreaming,

or embracing things that you had to

let go of in another existence.

There is no fear, confusion, or awkwardness,

no doubts of not belonging,

of not deserving to exist in such a place

where your soul can be pure,

and being able to thrive

without having to try so hard

anymore.

You don’t have to try anymore to

be a good person,

because you are one.

You don’t have to struggle to hold on to yourself,

you don’t have to feign ignorance

or enlightenment.

You can breathe and smile openly,

and every smile is so breathtakingly beautiful that

you glow and transcend above all heavens

and insecurities.

The ground is soft and supportive,

giving way to your feet, that no longer

feel so tired and heavy from having to labor to live,

or from constantly running away

from demons and voices

that tear at your conscience and soul.

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

No, you can now feel as light as air itself,

soft feet running on sunkissed clouds that

formed from tears of happiness.

When it rains,

you don’t have to take cover

for it has already washed away all your sorrows and guilts,

guilts in the forms of hot, suppressed tears

in the failures of your lost ambitions

and stolen discoveries,

guilt from turning away, even when someone

asked you for help.

You can forever venture out here,

to unknown, misty, thriving islands and majestic palaces

far away,

you can do things you never got to do,

for you don’t have to pretend

to be someone you aren’t.

You don’t have to live each day questioning

every single telltale of life.

You don’t have to wonder anymore

about why the world can be

such a cruel place,

no matter how many rays of hope

reach into the darkness.

You don’t have to wonder anymore,

because here

such misery does not exist,

and the ruins of a good soul

dance as a renewed, enlightened being again.

Above all,

you don’t have to live someone else’s life

because here, you find yourself

over and over

and over again.

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender

be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

and listen to others,

even the dull and the ignorant;

they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,

they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,

you may become vain and bitter;

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

+
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs;

for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals;

and everywhere life is full of heroism.

+
Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment

it is as perennial as the grass.

++
Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,

be gentle with yourself.

+++
You are a child of the universe,

no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

+++++
Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be,

and whatever your labors and aspirations,

in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

++++++++
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,

it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

In the Midst of the Shook Ones

Matthew 18:20

The poem “Desiderata”, written by Max Ehrmann (1927), resonates with my core philosophy about life and being human. It speaks to my heart with such beauty, simplicity and hard&black trUth that I had to share it with my tribe. It will appear in two places – – poems and in this section of “something’s been said” with an analysis written by writer Michael Shook. Mr. Shook also wrote, “I see the world differently and write fiercely and honestly about that.” Bravo Mr. Shook! Bravo! He did such a wonderful job explaining “Desiderata” that it would be impossible to duplicate, compete or replace his efforts. Yet, there is more to the universal story hidden from our consciousness. It can never be fully known choosing to remain mysterious and beyond our human wisdom. To accept this truth is to acknowledge humility and grace.

So, join the “Shook Ones” … we don’t bite only invite you to explore your trUth. Desiderata will either resonate for you or it won’t.

Desiderata

“Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.”

“Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.”

Stop talking to fill the silence and listen to your own inner voice.

“As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.”

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Everyone is walking their own path with their own struggles and could really use your good thoughts.

“Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.”

Loud and noisy persons are almost always trying to get you to pay attention to them instead of the voice of your own heart. The internet and TV are full of these people.

“If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.”

You are already you and nobody is going to be any better at being you than you are. And it is OK to let other people be who they are.

“Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.”

Much of the fun in life is the journey, not just the destination. If you don’t enjoy the journey, you are wasting most of your life.

“Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.”

Pick something you like to do and learn more about it, and let everyone else do the same.

“Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.”

Individually, people are pretty good. Many of them think they have to act some other way at work; they don’t have to, but they think they do. In their hearts, most people are kind and good. Pay attention to that part of them.

“Be yourself.”

Don’t pretend to be somebody you aren’t. It doesn’t work well, never lasts, and is always a waste of time. But understand that who you are and how you think is going to change over the course of your lifetime.

“Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.”

The greatest commandment is love. It is all that counts, and if you concentrate on loving others, you will find your own life filled with love in return.

“Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.”

It is OK to grow up; your view on things changes, and it’s really a lot of fun, no matter what they try to tell you about wanting to stay a child.

“Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.”

Authentic spirituality is always about love and light. If a spiritual practice or religion teaches anything different than that — especially if they are teaching you to be afraid — that teaching is wrong, and its time for you to let go of your attachment to it.

“Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.”

That inner voice that talks to you, you have control over. And when you let it say nice things to you, your life becomes more beautiful.

“You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”

You are not a mistake, you are not a sinner, everything you are is God. Everything. You are not cut off from God, he doesn’t think you are bad and every day He is sending you signs and symbols of how much He loves you.

“Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.”

It’s OK, the part that counts most is your heart. Think good thoughts, do good things, and allow others to do the same for you. Your perception of life will change tremendously, much for the better.

“Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.”

Let yourself be happy. Your life will be so much better when you are.

97 acres & a mule

Some suggest it is hard to find any good news during the pandemic. Truth be told, I have felt the same way consciously refusing to look at all the propaganda news everyday just so I can maintain balance in mind, body and spirit. Yet, if one cares to look deeper you can find evidence of unexpected positive changes and opportunity. Some folks are getting “blessed” during the pandemic as they are being forced to rethink possibilities even beyond what they see. I’ve even read media stories and talked to few people directly with incredible new business ventures forcing me to alter my perspective and outlook. So today, I want to highlight entrepreneurial ingenuity.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

 William Faulkner

The above quote was used as a foreshadowing prelude to the provocative, artsy film “Antebellum,” which literally displayed the stronghold existing between America’s historical past deeply connected to the original sin of slavery and the current American cultural angst. It is after viewing this film, with so much promise and seeing its failure to adequately bridge the story telling gap between the HIS-torical narrative and today, that I remembered two incredible examples illustrating the profound point suggested in the film.

In the aftermath of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery in 2020, many Americans may not know about the purchase of land in Georgia by 19 black families. The new location, called “Freedom GA” comprised of nearly 97 acres of unincorporated land near the town of Toomsboro and about 130 miles south of Atlanta, is being called a safe haven for black residents. This is a significant undertaking and quite an extraordinary milestone especially since the area has had a deeply troubled HIS-tory with slavery, lynching and the oppression of blacks. In fact, on August 30, 1871, Matthew Deason, a former Confederate soldier and elected sheriff of Wilkinson County, and his black mistress (whose name is not known) were lynched in Toomsboro by members of the Ku Klux Klan. The area also holds the title as the first documented lynching of a black woman in Georgia after the American Civil War.

Something profound is being said!

Can ya’ll see community unity too?

In spite of its hideous past, these new 19 black land owners are planning to make the site an enclave representing “heaven on earth” for black people, run by black people. These families came up with this idea because they wanted a safe place to raise their families without fear of police brutality or other forms of oppression embedded within American society. The whole idea is incredible, visionary and entrepreneurial all at the same time. And, it happened during a national pandemic and under a wave of police misconduct! WOW!

It’s not a black or white thing. It’s a Nu Amẹríkà thang!

The Town of Freedom is not up and running yet but it will have all the features of a community (infrastructure, businesses and eventually homes) when it’s completed. The founders have made a commitment to not exclude anyone (making a commitment to coexist – welcoming all) but they still intend for it to be a pro-Black town. Phase 1 will include clearing and farming the land. They will also create a man-made lake to use for sustainable fishing. This effort is a massive undertaking, and will presumably take years before it might be considered viable. These 19 families have a purpose and demonstrated a commitment worthy of high honor. The most encouraging aspect about this story is the notion of the collective coming together with a vision to create something Nu. If allowed to prosper without internal or external interference or corruption, this community will reflect the endless choices inherently possible within a vision for our Nu Amẹríkà. It is worthy of acknowledgement and praise.

At the same time in 2020, America’s ugly past is rearing its head full of hatred, discrimination and injustice. It has become clear we have not learned from the previous mistakes and only put a bandaid on wounds that have continued to fester. A little over a century ago in September 30, 1919, for example, American solders from Camp Pike once led captured black tenant farmers in Elaine, Arkansas, to their untimely death. What was the black farmer’s crime? They were unionizing to obtain fair prices for their cotton and attempting, in some cases, to buy their own farms. Some of the black men had returned from World War I expecting to be treated equitably after their military service. They had given up on receiving the dream of acquiring “40 acres and a mule” as promised by the US government to their ancestors after the American Civil war. Yet, these families were still willing to try to make the effort to improve their lot in life through hard work, energy and effort. Unfortunately, their collective strategy to unionize and increase their self-sufficiency were thwarted by outside interests wanting to keep control over the farming and cotton market. Sadly, one of their own people (double agent) spread a false rumor of an upcoming black revolt with potential murders against the white land owners. The unfortunate battle of agendas came to a point of no return during a confrontation between the whites and some of the black farmers at a church attended by the farmers. No one could say who shot first but mayhem ensued with church attendees fleeing with their children. Over the next few days, entire families of blacks (men, women and children) were sought out and killed.

Proverbs 3 Amen

This tragically, heart breaking story is reminder of what lies beneath the surface in our current democracy. A tug of war between our grandest ideals and the insidious nature of fear, hatred and greed simmering in our society. It has always been about POWER. I question whether history will repeat itself once more and if our collective commitment to freedom and democracy is strong enough to prevail. Are we willing to fight for a more perfect union? But, there is always good news demanding to be seen and heard even in the middle of sh!t show. In the “Art of War”, the battle is not won necessary by the strong, fastest or most powerful. In the long run, it can be won by the wiser, pragmatic and more strategic characters who understand human nature  – – and those who possess a vision and plan. With love being energetically the highest frequency for creation, who would have the audacity to go against a divine plan? We all have a choice to make in terms of who and what we wish to be and bring energetically (love or fear) into the world. Even a non-choice is a choice. Since all have an important role to play regardless of age, class, gender, race etc., lets repent for the past mistakes and make a commitment to approach each Nu day determined to do it better. As Nov 3 approaches, everyone needs to put on their entrepreneurial caps just like the 19 families and begin thinking of a master plan for our Nu Amẹríkà. I can already see it manifesting in my 20/20 vision. What resolution do you envision?

A Love Supreme Part 2 Resolution

yes … i can see it 2 Mr. Coltrane

Game Over

I received an official confirmation that my mail-in ballot was counted for the 2020 presidential election. Early media reports are showing a significant influx of requests for mail-in ballots so I’m not the only one utilizing this option. I must admit, however, being slightly unsure about the process and wondering if my vote would mysteriously disappear. More people have taken this route in an attempt to exercise their civic duty and to protect their safety during a national pandemic. Many young adults are surprisingly not focused on which voting strategy to use but rather still questioning the fundamental impact of voting believing it may not matter who is in office. They are frustrated and believe both political parties (Democrats and Republicans) are lacking. The recent shenanigans and ineffectiveness by our politicians have been “exposed” after the removal of carefully constructed civic personas (masks) and the current disinformation campaigns. All the games being played right now – – voter suppression, fear mongering about alleged mail-in ballet fraud, COVID-19 misinformation – – are rampant as we approach Nov 3. Something is being said very loudly! All I can say is “Let My People Vote” please– – using all the safe and legal options available within our democratic society. After all, America once promoted open and free elections around the world serving as an example for what they should look like.

Honest Abe ain’t never lied ya’ll.

Our democracy is being threatened but the game ain’t over until its over!

It still astonishes me how some are rationalizing the blatant hypocrisy revolving around the right to vote in 2020. There seems to be no shame or remorse for reneging on our democratic principles. Yet, we should not really be surprised since we also often forget just how much personal character matters – – immensely. My grandfather, a simple and very wise man, always stressed the importance of this personality trait in any man. It will tell you a lot about a human being – – without signifying perfection. He believed that there is always potential for collaboration or working out a conflict with a man or woman with real character (possessing authentic integrity, honesty, kindness, reasonable, fair etc.). A person void of such traits is often unable and unwilling to see the bigger picture being prone to self interest, greed and perhaps lacking in emotional intelligence (you know the thing that makes us different from animals). We have all received a rude awakening threatening the future of America.

All games are being revealed in politics, entertainment, corporations, religion, education…

This life is really but a dream.

I just can’t personally play the current confusing games in terms of what I see and hear bellowing recently from our politicians and some of the propaganda media. It is ridiculous and insulting listening to the type of stories coming out now about the upcoming election designed to keep us off the substantive issues (COVID-19 – its seriousness, who has it or who is mysteriously immune to it; diverse political agendas to save our economy; the future of our legal system and the raging racial battle brewing just below the surface just to name a few). This is where my logical and intuitive minds collide with a vengeance seeking trUth and solutions without getting caught up into the mind games and traps designed to keep us all in confusion and off balance.

So, you recovered from COVID-19 in 3 days?

“Whatcha talkin’ bout 45?”

Most Americans recognize the importance of making a clear statement, via voting, to indicate our hopes for America’s future. We also recognize corruption when we see it but steering clear of the confusion isn’t easy. If this is a desired goal, one must do what it is in our control to make a difference as well as co-create and empower our leaders, who demonstrate authentic character, to lead the charge for a fair election process. The “fix” (aka 2020 election gate) may already be in progress but nothing is “set in stone” unless we let it be so. None of these narratives being reported have to be accepted as fact or reality either unless we choose to give it energy and participate.

People have real challenges happening in their lives in 2020. They need real solutions too. There is a lot of political maneuvering for power but remember it takes two to play in any game. “I ain’t got time for that,” said YouTube sensation, Sweet Brown, a few years ago while describing her encounter with a raging house fire. Ms. Brown and I are in total agreement. I respect and appreciate receiving the “hard&black truth no chaser” especially when forced to respond to critical life events and time is of the essence. Tell me what it is and I’ll make my own decision and master plan (in the best interest for myself and others). We also have the option to not participate (respond, not react) in the games leaving the players alone in their foolery. There is nothing more satisfying than sitting back and watching all the “house of cards” fold “unveiling” the hidden details and trUth. Believe me … the game will be over when the collective is more focussed on the vision for co-creating a Nu Amẹríkà and not debating the cult of personality currently controlling the country’s narrative.

Straight, No Chaser? Sounds good to me, Mr. Monk.

All the World’s a Stage

Photo by Robert Collins on Unsplash

All the world’s a stage,

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances,

And one man in his time plays many parts,

His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,

Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.

Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel

And shining morning face, creeping like snail

Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,

Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad

Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,

Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,

Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,

Seeking the bubble reputation

Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,

In fair round belly with good capon lined,

With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,

Full of wise saws and modern instances;

And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts

Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,

With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;

His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide

For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,

Turning again toward childish treble, pipes

And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,

That ends this strange eventful history,

Is second childishness and mere oblivion,

Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
